Following his meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, President Anastasiades said that road crossings in Dherynia and Lefka will open on the 12th of November.

The President, speaking to journalists after a much anticipated meeting, also said that progress is expected on the issue of normalising telecommunication services so that mobile phones would operate on both sides of the divide. The measure has been discussed for a considerable time and is considered an important confidence building measure.

Anastasiades in a tweet expressed his support for a solution based on a bizonal bicommunal federation, qualifying that he discussed with Mustafa Akinci the issue of devolving a number of central government powers in order to create a functional state.

Deliberations are underway as the two leaders are expected to meet UNSG representative Jane Hull Lute on October 31st.

A joint statement released by the United Nations in Cyprus after the meeting said: 'The leaders are pleased to announce that on 12 November 2018, crossing points at Lefka/Aplici and Deryneia/Derinya will be open. They also had a frank exchange of views on the way forward. They confirmed their readiness to engage constructively with Ms. Jane Holl Lute, who will be visiting the island on 31 October 2018'.
