Biker dies in Strovolos road collision

Motorcycle helmet was not enough to save Yiorgos Xenofontos from Lakatamia

A biker from Lakatamia lost his life Sunday in a deadly collision in Strovolos, after his motorbike slammed into a car in front of him.

The victim, 29-year-old Yiorgos Xenofontos, was riding his bike on Sunday around 1pm in Nicosia's west Strovolos, outside Cineplex, when he collided with a vehicle ahead of him driven by a 58-year-old female driver.

Unconfirmed reports saiid the car was attempting to make a right turn into a mini market while the biker was overtaking the vehicle, when the collision took place.

Traffic police investigators believe Xenofontos was wearing his protective helmet

Xenofontos was ejected from his bike as a result of the collision.

Media reports said Xenofontos was pinned under a car and firefighters had to be called to the scene to get him out of the undercarriage.

His motorbike slammed into another vehicle which was parked on the side of the road.

Xenofontos was rushed to the Nicosia General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police investigators believe Xenofontos could have been wearing his protective helmet but this has not been confirmed. 

The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the accident.

The accident is under investigation.
