A senior citizen lay dead for some time on a Limassol beach, until a passerby came close to check on him and notified authorities.

Police say a female beachgoer spotted a man lying in the sand on Lady’s Mile beach on Friday morning. But when she thought the man was not moving at all, she got suspicious and decided to get closer to check up on him.

At that point she realised the man was out of consciousness and called the police, while an ambulance rushed to the scene.

The man was transported to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

A scheduled autopsy later is expected to reveal the exact cause of death.

Media sources say the man had gone to the beach for a morning swim.
