Around 6am on Thursday morning, an elderly couple was struck by an oncoming vehicle on Kolinakiou Avenue, near a supermarket.

The pedestrians, an 80-year-old woman and her 86-year-old husband, were rushed to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital and later transferred to Nicosia General due to their serious condition.

Doctors on duty later said the woman succumbed to her injuries while her husband remained in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle, a 70-year-old British male according to media reports, is a permanent resident of Cyprus. A warrant for his arrest has been issued, while CNA reported a preliminary Breathalyzer test showed zero alcohol in his blood stream.

The accident caused severe traffic jams in the area.
