Newsroom

The Forestry Department says it has been taking steps to ensure the safety of camping sites and their surrounding areas, following an evacuation at Polis campground due to a suspicious fire.

Andreas Christou, a Forestry Department officer, spoke to CNA News Agency on security steps taken in all camping sites managed by the Department, in Stavros tis Psokas, Platania and Kampi tou Kalogyrou in Troodos mountains.

The department has installed fire hoses and a large water container with 100 tonnes capacity so that adequate water will be available if necessary.

Forestry department officers go on frequent patrols in the area and visitors are provided with safety guidelines within the camping areas.

Christou said the fire that caused the Polis Chrysochous campsite to be evacuated was put out fairly quickly due to the close proximity of the fire service and fire department stations in the area.
