A 66-year-old German tourist, who was on a short vacation in Cyprus, died in an apparent drowning incident Monday afternoon in Peyia.

The incident took place around 4:20pm, when lifeguards rushed to the man’s aid, who was reportedly unconscious, and pulled him out of the water. Initial reports said beachgoers heard the man in the water calling for help earlier.

Lifeguards attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man but failed to revive him. He was rushed to the Emergency Room at Paphos General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. An autopsy scheduled for Wednesday is expected to reveal the exact cause of death.

The victim was on vacation with his wife.
