The Cyprus problem was among the issues which the Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, and the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, discussed on Thursday in Athens.

In joint statements after their talks, Tsipras and Merkel emphasized the opening of a new chapter in Greek-German relations, focusing on the upgrading of the two countries` bilateral cooperation and the development of policies for Europe’s sustainability.

During Merkel΄s official visit to Greece, the two leaders discussed a detailed agenda on current geopolitical and European issues, among which was the Cyprus issue. As Prime Minister Tsipras said, Greece underlined the need for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

He also stressed that Greece supports Turkey’s European perspective, stressing the need for Ankara to respect the international law in the Aegean sea and the Eastern Mediterranean region. As Prime Minister Tsipras said, this issue is highly important, especially at a time when new Energy plans are emerging in the region. “The Republic of Cyprus proceeds with its energy planning and the drillings, exercising its fully legitimate sovereign rights”, Tsipras underlined.
