The body of a man on a recreational fishing expedition was spotted floating in the water Friday at Lara beach in Akamas, marking the fourth fatality in just a few hours as the week draws to a close.

The 44-year-old man had gone for recreational fishing in the Akamas area, Paphos, according to officials who later located a spear gun nearby.

Media reports said the man’s girlfriend was the first to spot the body floating in the water next to a boat, while it was not immediately clear whether the female was on land at the time.

Officers from the Coast Guard and an ambulance rushed to the scene.

The lifeless body was taken to Paphos General Hospital where doctors on duty officially pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police are investigating the incident.
