A Russian national was arrested in Cyprus for money fraud, based on a Russian warrant, upon landing at Larnaca International Airport on Monday.

According to police, a 48-year-old male on a flight from Beirut to Larnaca arrived in Cyprus Monday afternoon around 1:30pm, when he triggered an active Russian arrest warrant against him during passport inspection.

Moscow had placed the Russian national on a stop list back in 2017, following an international arrest warrant issued on 8 December 2017. Reports said the justification in the warrant was “serious fraud case.”

The passenger was detained on charges in connection with financial crimes, which Moscow says took place between April 18 and May 24 in 2016 when he and two others defrauded another Russian man in a money swindle worth €300,000.

The suspect was scheduled to appear before a Larnaca District Court where extradition hearing are set to begin, while CID Larnaca is investigating the case.
