Russian tourist dies in Ayia Napa waters

Late afternoon swim at Katsarka beach turns deadly for 31-year-old man

Police are investigating the death of a 31-year-old Russian tourist, who was found unconscious in Ayia Napa shallow waters at Katsarka beach.

Denis Vladimovich Zeziulin, a Russian national who was staying at a local hotel, had gone for a swim Wednesday late afternoon at Katsarka beach.

Around 6pm, according to reports, a friend spotted Zeziulin who was unconscious in shallow waters.

Police officials said Katsarka beach has a rocky shore and there were rough seas in the area during the late afternoon

An ambulance rushed to the scene and trasponrted the man to Famagusta General Hospital, where doctor son duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

Media sources said police investigators, who went to the hospital to inspect the body, did not see signs of external injuries. But an autopsy later at Larnaca General is expected to reveal the exact cause of death.

Police officials said Katsarka beach has a rocky shore and there were rough seas in the area during the late afternoon.

Ayia Napa police are investigating the incident.
