A serious traffic accident took place on a main road in Nicosia late Wednesday night, when a car lost its wheels and multiple vehicles collided.

Three people were injured in a multi-vehicle accident on Griva Digeni avenue, in Engomi, when a Jeep lost two wheels during an overtake maneuver according to reports.

The accident took place just after 11pm, with a total of four vehicles being involved. At least one vehicle, whose driver who saw a loose wheel on the road, swerved to avoid it and collided with an oncoming car as a result.

Private citizens who heard and saw the collision immediately rushed to the scene, which is close by a number of locally-run cafés, clubs and commercial establishments.

Police and ambulances also arrived on the scene, along with fire fighters who had to use the Jaws of Life to remove injured victims, who were taken to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital for precautionary reasons.

No serious injuries were reported while it was not fully clear whether excessive speed was a factor.

The avenue was closed to traffic for an extended period as police investigators examined and until the wreckage was removed.
