The driver who was clocked at 200 kilometres on the highway earlier this week has been sentenced to three weeks behind bars.

The 31-year-old man, who was arrested on Tuesday early morning, was caught driving his car at 200 kilometres per hour (124 miles) in a zone with a limit set at 100 kilometres on the Nicosia-Limassol highway.

A Nicosia District Court judge sentenced the driver to 20 days in prison and ordered his licence suspended for five months

A Nicosia District Court judge sentenced the driver on Thursday to 20 days in prison and ordered his licence suspended for five months.

Two years probation

The court also set bail at €1000 in the form of a personal guarantee on the condition that the driver would obey all traffic regulations for a period of two years starting from the beginning of his sentence.

It was not clear whether a Breathalyzer test had influenced the judge’s decision, but earlier reports said the driver registered 23mg during a test on the spot, which was one (1) milligram over the limit set at 22mg.

In a statement following the incident, police said “the driver was caught driving with excessive speed, putting not only his life at risk but also endangering the safety of other motorists.”
