Cyprus transforms into wintry wonderland with rain and hail

Met Office issues warning as unstable air mass causes thunderstorms and limited visibility

On Tuesday (30/05), Cyprus experienced a sudden change in weather with heavy rainfall and hail across the island, creating a wintry scene. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for severe thunderstorms, attributing the unstable air mass as the cause.

The Police have reported limited visibility and water accumulation in Lympion, Athienou, and Kosi due to adverse weather conditions. They advise drivers to exercise caution.

According to the meteorological service, the afternoon will be partly cloudy, locally mostly cloudy, with isolated showers and occasional thunderstorms, primarily in inland areas. There is a possibility of hail during thunderstorms. Winds will mainly blow from the southwest to northwest, light to moderate, at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and the sea will be slightly rough.

Tonight, occasional low clouds are expected, and in the early morning hours, there may be sparse fog, particularly in the interior and southeast regions. Initially, winds will be from southwest to northwest, light to moderate, at 3 to 4 Beaufort, later shifting to the northwest to northeast, and locally variable with light intensity at 3 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will range from 14 degrees Celsius inland, around 17 degrees Celsius on the coast, to 8 degrees Celsius in the higher mountains.

Tomorrow, there will be intermittent clouds with isolated showers, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and inland areas. Winds will start from the south to southwest, light to moderate, at 3 to 4 Beaufort, later shifting mainly to the southwest to northwest, maintaining the same intensity. The sea will be slightly rough. Temperature-wise, it will reach 28 degrees Celsius inland, around 26 degrees Celsius on the coast, and 21 degrees Celsius in the higher mountains.

On Thursday and Friday, there will be intermittent periods of increasing mid to high clouds, resulting in a few isolated light showers. Dust will be suspended in the atmosphere over the weekend, with occasional high concentrations. Saturday's weather is expected to be mainly clear.
