A local man was found dead in his jail cell on Thursday morning, just hours after he was detained on assault charges for resisting arrest and cursing at a police officer.

Police say officers responded to a domestic violence incident on Wednesday afternoon where they found a suspect, described as a 37-year-old Greek Cypriot male.

The suspect was booked into jail at Nicosia’s Lakatamia penitentiary where reports said he was later found unconscious inside his cell around 2am

Sources told Knews the suspect appeared to have been agitated when police officers approached him. He reportedly resisted arrest and insulted police officers during their attempt to subdue and detain him.

The suspect was booked into jail at Nicosia’s Lakatamia penitentiary where reports said he was later found unconscious inside his cell around 2am. He was immediately rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police did not issue an official account of the incident or arrest of the suspect, while sources told Knews the man was not expected to appear in court the following day.

A post mortem is expected to reveal the exact cause of death, while the overall case is under police investigation.
