Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis met with UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar during her ongoing visit to Cyprus, highlighting the significance of bi-communal projects in fostering trust between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The meeting, held on Wednesday, focused on initiatives aimed at improving daily living and working conditions between the two communities.

Yiorkadjis briefed Holguín on various projects, including the wastewater treatment plant in the Turkish-occupied Mia Milia area and employment opportunities for Turkish Cypriots at the Cyens Centre of Excellence. Discussions also encompassed the redevelopment of the Pediaios River, the potential creation of new crossing points in historic Nicosia, and rainwater management within the buffer zone.

These projects, according to Yiorkadjis, play a pivotal role in fostering trust and cooperation between the divided communities in Nicosia, which remains Europe's last divided capital.

Meanwhile, UN Envoy Holguín continues her engagements on the island, holding discussions with key stakeholders to explore avenues for bridging divides and advancing efforts towards a resolution of the longstanding Cyprus issue.
