Shaket seeking to 'nationalize' orthodox church land

Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said yesterday that she planned to pass a law aimed at confiscating the land

Newsroom

Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said yesterday that she planned to pass a law aimed at confiscating land belonging to the Orthodox Church in Jerusalem under the pretext of “protecting” buildings built on it where Israelis live.

She also said the patriarchate had sold these lands to Israel land brokers. Shaked continued that she intended to introduce the law, prepared by MK Rahel Azarioya in the ministerial committee for legislation on Sunday.

The land in question was leased by the Israeli ''Keren Kemit'' company for 99 years by the patriarchate in Jerusalem. The bill would allow for this property to be ''nationalized'' and also stipulates that the land rights would be transferred to the ownership of the state in exchange for compensation for the contractors.
