Ever bought something only to later discover it had been recalled?
Soon, checking whether a product is safe could be as easy as checking the weather.
The Cyprus government has approved the creation of a new online platform that will allow the public to quickly find out whether products sold on the local market have been found to be unsafe, fail to meet safety standards or have been officially recalled.
The decision was approved by the Council of Ministers on Thursday following a proposal by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry.
For consumers, the new website aims to solve a common problem: important safety information is often spread across different government departments, making it difficult to know where to look.
Instead of searching multiple websites, shoppers will be able to visit a single platform to see whether a product has been flagged by the authorities.
That could include everything from children's toys and electrical appliances to cosmetics, household items, and other consumer goods.
The ministry said inspectors already carry out daily checks to ensure products sold in Cyprus comply with safety regulations. Whenever dangerous or non-compliant products are found, authorities move quickly to remove them from the market and protect the public.
The difference now is that consumers will have easier access to that information themselves.
The platform will be updated directly by all of Cyprus' market surveillance authorities and will also include alerts from European product safety systems whenever they concern products available on the Cypriot market.
Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Michalis Damianos said the website will cover all categories of non-compliant products, rather than focusing on a specific sector.
He added that the platform is expected to go live within the next few months.
The ministry said the initiative is designed to make better use of technology, improve transparency, and strengthen consumer protection.
For families, it could become a useful habit before making a purchase, especially when buying products for children or electrical items. And if something you already own is later found to be unsafe, finding out won't mean trawling through multiple government announcements. Instead, the information will be available in one place, just a few clicks away.
