Consumer spending in Cyprus remains strong despite market uncertainty caused by inflationary pressures and the war in the Middle East.
Cypriot consumers took advantage of the summer sales that began in late June, with clothing and footwear among the most popular purchases. Shopping centers across the island recorded higher traffic compared with the same period last year, while retailers are hoping for double-digit growth in turnover by the end of August, when the summer sales season ends.
According to market representatives, retail activity has been driven mainly by local consumers. Although tourism has started to recover, visitors appear more cautious and are spending less compared with previous years.
Shopping centers are seeing the biggest increase in customer numbers, while traditional shopping streets are experiencing a less positive picture, partly due to the summer heat and other factors.
Sales bring boost to retail
The summer sales season got off to a positive start, with Cypriot shoppers responding well to discounts and special offers, giving a boost to retailers.
Most shops launched their sales on June 25 and 26, bringing optimism among business owners. Consumers have also expressed satisfaction with the discounts available, especially in clothing and footwear.
Market officials said customer traffic is higher compared with last year, with several businesses reporting improved sales. While it is still early to draw final conclusions, the first weeks suggest Cypriots continue to take advantage of offers, particularly when discounts apply to current-season products.
The reductions are not limited to older collections. In many cases, shoppers can find discounts of 20% to 30% even on this year’s clothing, bags and accessories.
Retailers are aiming to clear much of their stock by mid-August before introducing their autumn collections.
Malls become more than shopping destinations
Shopping centers continue to attract large crowds, with retailers saying malls have evolved into more than just places to shop.
For many Cypriots, malls now combine shopping, dining, and entertainment in one location, offering air conditioning, easy access, and convenient parking, factors that become especially important during the hot summer months.
Younger generations have increasingly adopted shopping centers as a preferred destination for both shopping and socializing, while more older consumers are also following the trend.
Locals spending; tourists more cautious
Despite global uncertainty and tensions in the Middle East, businesses say they have not seen a major change in Cypriot shopping habits.
Unlike previous years, when retail activity relied heavily on tourist spending, this year the market is being supported mainly by local consumers.
Although tourist arrivals are recovering, businesses in tourist areas say visitors appear more careful with their spending. This is attributed to wider economic uncertainty and greater caution over non-essential purchases.
Despite the positive start, retailers remain cautious, saying the real picture of the summer sales will become clearer at the end of the season, when it will be known whether consumer momentum continues.
Cyprus leads EU in retail growth
The positive performance of Cyprus’ retail sector is also reflected in Eurostat figures.
According to the data, Cyprus recorded the largest increase in retail sales volume among EU countries with available figures in May 2026.
Retail sales volume in Cyprus increased by 3.7% in May compared with April 2026, while on an annual basis it rose by 8.4% compared with May 2025.
Across the European Union, retail sales volume increased by 0.5% in May, while the eurozone recorded growth of 0.2%.
Year-on-year, Cyprus recorded the highest increase in retail sales among EU member states at 8.4%, followed by Bulgaria at 7.9% and Luxembourg at 7.8%.
The figures show that despite economic pressures and global uncertainty, Cypriot consumers continue to keep the retail market moving.
