Eurobank profits climb as Cyprus delivers nearly a third of earnings

The bank held €24.3 billion in customer deposits in Cyprus, more than twice the amount it had lent through its local operations.

Eurobank’s profits rose in the first nine months of 2026, with Cyprus providing nearly a third of the group’s adjusted earnings, even though profits from its operations on the island fell slightly.

The group reported net profits of €1.16 billion, up 12.4% from a year earlier, as it expanded lending and earned more from interest, fees and commissions.

Cyprus contributed €356 million in adjusted profits, a measure that leaves out certain one-off items. That was down 3.9% from last year but still accounted for about 29% of the group’s total.

One striking detail is how much customers have deposited with the bank in Cyprus compared with how much it has lent locally. Deposits stood at €24.3 billion at the end of September, against €9.3 billion in loans, roughly €2.60 deposited for every euro lent.

Across the group, the bank’s earnings grew from two familiar sources: interest and charges for financial services.

Net interest income, the difference between the interest the bank earns and what it pays out, increased 8.7% to €2.07 billion. Income from fees and commissions rose 13% to €630 million, supported by lending, investment management and insurance.

Shareholders will receive a €214 million interim dividend on Nov. 26, up 27% from last year.

There was a caution, too. While the proportion of troubled loans fell, Eurobank warned that changes linked to legislation on Swiss franc loans could mean some borrowing is reclassified as being at greater risk of going unpaid. The bank said this was not expected to increase its credit risk costs.

CEO Fokion Karavias said the results put Eurobank in a stronger position to meet or beat its annual targets, despite pressure from energy costs and inflation in Europe.
