MTN Cyprus has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Huawei to kickstart research trials and facilitate a smooth transition to a 5G network.
According to a press release, MTN and Huawei signed a memorandum of cooperation on Monday during the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona.
The agreement aims to put together a joined task force committee to share technical expertise on the 5G global ecosystem and create the conditions for a smooth introduction and development of the 5G network on the island.

MTN Cyprus CEO Thanos Chronopoulos said the company is ready to do its share within a national strategy that would improve the image of the island and put it firmly on the telecommunications map of the region.
Chronopoulos, who became CEO after Monaco Telecom acquired the entire issued share capital in September 2018, also spoke about the future of 5G in Cyprus.
“In this new era, MTN is faster, more flexible, and more dynamic. This cooperation will put us in the advanced 5G global ecosystem and open the path for the technological future of Cyprus,” the CEO said.
Philip Gan, Huawei’s Vice President CEE & Nordic Region, saw the cooperation as a sign that European markets are positioning themselves in such a way to address the needs of the new era.
“THe agreement of this new strategic cooperation with MTN Cyprus shows that European markets are focusing firstly and primarily on the development of advanced technology in order to answer the call of the needs of the new era as best as possible,” Gan said.
MWC Barcelona is the largest mobile event in the world, bringing together the latest innovations and leading-edge technology. This year’s theme is “Intelligent Connectivity” which refers to the powerful combination of flexible, high-speed 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.
