Surge in bounced checks worth €1.6 million in 2023

Central Information Register reports increase in individuals and entities linked to uncovered checks, prompting concerns

In November 2023, the Central Information Register (CIR) in Cyprus recorded a total of 33 uncovered checks, amounting to €60,851. The preliminary registry revealed 17 entities, consisting of 9 legal entities and 8 individuals linked to these incidents.

Data released by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) on Monday highlighted that from January to November 2023, a total of 313 uncovered checks were registered in the CIR, with a cumulative value of €1,597,703. This marked an increase from €1,453,020 recorded during the same period in the previous year. The incidents involved 209 individuals, comprising 118 legal entities and 91 individuals.

CBC statistics further indicated that the CIR listed 21 individuals in November 2023, including 8 legal entities, 3 individuals, and 10 individuals controlling legal entities. Over the eleven-month period, a total of 249 individuals were registered in the CIR, reflecting a rise from the 231 individuals recorded during the corresponding period in 2022.
