A coffee by the sea in Limassol without needing to check your bank balance first? Apparently, yes.
One of the city's best-known municipal seafront cafés has found its new operator, with KTIMA DIMOSTHENOUS LTD securing the right to run the popular spot for the next five years.
And while customers will be protected from eye-watering prices on several café staples, the operator itself will be paying quite a different kind of bill.
The five-year agreement is worth €796,260, which works out at an impressive €13,271 a month in rent.
According to a report by Politis, the winning offer was actually the second-highest submitted. The highest bid, from KASPINAS GROUP LTD, was rejected because it did not meet all the requirements of the tender.
The new operator is expected to get to work immediately, good timing, considering August and the Limassol seafront are hardly strangers to one another.
But perhaps the most interesting part of the deal for anyone planning a seaside coffee is the municipality's price list.
As part of the tender conditions, maximum prices have been set for nine popular items:
- Cypriot coffee: €1.50
- Frappe: €2
- Nescafe: €2
- Freddo espresso: €3
- Tea: €2
- Canned Cypriot juice: €1.50
- Canned beer: €3
- Domestic wine: €5
- 500 ml bottled water: €1
In a city where a front-row seat to the sea can often come with a front-row price tag, those numbers may be the part Limassolians appreciate most.
The company now has five years to make the numbers work, €13,271 in monthly rent on one side and €1.50 Cypriot coffees on the other.
For the rest of us, there are worse ways to spend a summer afternoon than coffee by the Limassol sea without feeling you've just paid for the sunbed as well.
