A 12-month-old baby has died at Limassol General Hospital after being brought in unconscious by his father in a deeply tragic incident that has shocked the local community.
According to initial information, the infant had been unwell since June 23 and had already been seen by a pediatrician. However, on Thursday, June 25, the child was rushed to the hospital unconscious.
Despite the efforts of doctors on duty to revive him, the baby was pronounced dead around 11:30 p.m.
Police launch investigation
Police were immediately called to the hospital following the child’s death. Officers examined the scene and confirmed that no external injuries were found on the infant’s body.
Limassol CID Chief Costas Michael said the case will now be fully investigated, with a post-mortem examination and witness statements expected to help determine what led to the tragedy.
Autopsy to determine cause of death
A forensic pathologist has been assigned to carry out an official autopsy in the coming hours to establish the exact cause of death.
Authorities say all possibilities will be examined as part of the investigation, including medical factors, as they work to understand how the situation developed so quickly after the child first became unwell.
A family in shock, answers awaited
At this stage, there is no indication of external trauma, and officials are treating the case as an unexplained medical death pending the results of the autopsy.
For the family, the focus now is on waiting for answers in the coming days, as investigators try to piece together the final hours of the child’s life.
The case remains under investigation.
