Police are investigating an attempted murder in the Famagusta district after an 18-year-old man was seriously injured Saturday night. A 23-year-old suspect has been arrested, authorities said.

Police said they received a report around 8:15 p.m. of an injured person in Paralimni. Officers who responded found the 18-year-old had been attacked with a sharp object. The assailant fled the scene.

The victim was taken to Famagusta General Hospital before being transferred to Nicosia General Hospital. Doctors said his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

During the investigation, police said evidence linked a 23-year-old man to the case. He was located about 8:45 p.m. in Paralimni and initially arrested for causing a disturbance, public nuisance and breach of the peace after shouting at officers in a way that caused alarm.

A court later issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with the attempted murder investigation. He was re-arrested under that warrant and remains in custody, police said.
