A 40-year-old woman is in critical condition at Nicosia General Hospital after receiving an intravenous preparation intended for delivery through the digestive system, according to reports published on Thursday.
The incident took place on Wednesday, October 14, while the patient was being treated at the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre. She was given an enteral nutrition solution, which is designed to provide nutrients through the digestive tract rather than directly into the bloodstream.
According to SigmaLive, the woman's health deteriorated after the substance was administered. She developed severe breathing difficulties, a fall in blood oxygen saturation and an elevated heart rate, prompting her emergency transfer to Nicosia General Hospital.
The management of the Oncology Centre has ordered an internal investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement, the Centre confirmed that the patient had been transferred to the Accident and Emergency Department of Nicosia General Hospital on October 14, where she remains hospitalised.
The Centre said its immediate priority is to ensure the patient receives appropriate care and to support her family. It also pledged full transparency regarding the investigation's findings.
Citing medical confidentiality and the investigation, the Centre declined to provide further details.
The circumstances that led to the incorrect administration of the preparation have not yet been established publicly.
