A Paphos court on Wednesday sentenced a 64-year-old man to 16 years in prison on charges of raping and sexually abusing a minor.

The Permanent Assize Court of Paphos imposed concurrent prison terms after finding the defendant guilty of rape under Article 144 of the Penal Code and sexual abuse of minors under Articles 6(3)(7) and 6(4)(9) of Law 91(I)/2014.

In a statement, the Registrar of the Paphos District Court said judges weighed the seriousness of the offenses, the circumstances in which they were committed, and the physical and psychological harm to the victim, who was described as being at a young and vulnerable age.

The court also considered mitigating factors, including the man’s lack of a prior criminal record, his health problems, his age and life expectancy, and the impact of the sentence on his family.
