The European Parliament today gave its final green light to the introduction in the EU of a universal charger for all small and medium-sized portable electronic devices - mobile phones, tablets and other consoles.
Following the vote by MEPs in Strasbourg, USB-C will become by autumn 2024 the only charger for portable electronic devices sold in the EU, despite opposition from Apple.
"It's a great day for consumers, a great day for our environment," said in the plenary chamber of the European Parliament, Maltese Labour MEP Alex Saliba, rapporteur of the bill, which was passed with 602 votes in favor, 13 against and 8 abstentions.
The same measure is to apply to portable computers from the beginning of 2026.
