Avramopoulos: Cyprus is not alone on Migration

Technical teams, reception infrastructure and border police part of EU measures

The EU Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos expressed his personal support as well as the support of the Commission with regards to the migration challenges faced by Cyprus.

Avramopoulos met with President Nicos Anastasiades and sat down with the ministerial working group on migration made up of Interior Minister Costantinos Petrides, Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides and Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou.  

The European Commissioner emphasized that Cyprus is not alone in terms of financial means or practical logistical measures aimed at tackling the increase in the number of migrants and refugees.

Avramopoulos announced that technical teams will be created to conduct needs assessment and a newly established border police will cover the geographical area of Cyprus.

On his part Interior Minister Petrides thanked the EU Commissioner for the solidarity and his willingness to assist Cyprus.
