A 22-month-old child was hospitalized with second-degree burns, head injuries, and signs of neglect, authorities said Tuesday.

Police have arrested two people, ages 31 and 35, in connection with the case on suspicion of child endangerment.

The child was brought to a private clinic in Limassol around 8:30 p.m. Monday with burns on the palms and soles, abrasions on the head, and indications of general neglect, doctors said. The child's condition is described as serious but stable. They remain under medical care.

Authorities said family members gave explanations for the injuries that are under investigation. Police took the two suspects into custody to assist with the inquiry.

The family’s three other minor children have been placed in the care of Social Welfare Services.

The Limassol Criminal Investigation Department is leading the investigation.
