Christmas countdown: Mild weather today, but showers and snow on the way

Clear skies for now, but expect increasing clouds, rain, and even some snow in the mountains as the weekend progresses.

Newsroom

Well folks, it’s Friday once again—Friday, December 20th, to be exact—and with Christmas just around the corner (yes, it's next Wednesday, December 25th!), let’s see what the weather has in store for us this holiday season!

A weak low-pressure system is hanging around the region today, with another one creeping in from Northern Greece over the weekend. But no worries, it’s not all bad news—just enough to keep things interesting!

Today, expect mostly clear skies, with a touch of those high clouds rolling in. Winds will be light to moderate from the north and northeast, around 3 to 4 Beaufort, so nothing too intense—just a gentle breeze to keep you feeling festive. The sea will be a bit on the choppy side, but not enough to stop anyone from having a merry time by the coast.

As for temperatures, we’ll see highs around 18°C inland, about 21°C along the southeast, east, and west coasts, and around 20°C on the rest of the coasts. Over in the higher mountains, it’ll be chillier, reaching only around 9°C, perfect for getting into the holiday spirit!

As we head into tonight, skies will clear up, though you might notice some patchy clouds, especially in the west, with a chance of some isolated showers later on. So, if you’re out Christmas shopping in the west, you might want to bring a festive umbrella! Temperatures will drop to around 6°C inland, 9°C on the coasts, and 2°C in the mountains where frost may make a special appearance—maybe a little Christmas magic from Mother Nature!

Saturday will start off mostly clear, but those clouds will start creeping in from the west. By the afternoon, we could see local showers and even isolated thunderstorms, with a chance of hail (just in time for a winter wonderland!).

On Sunday, don’t let those morning showers or thunderstorms spoil your holiday shopping plans—things will clear up quickly, and we’ll get back to more pleasant, mostly clear weather by the afternoon.

Looking ahead to Monday, the clouds return and local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected, with snow or sleet possibly hitting the higher peaks of Troodos. Yes, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas up there!

Temperature-wise, expect a slight rise on Saturday, then a gradual dip back to seasonal averages by Monday. So, bundle up, especially if you’re planning to hit the slopes or maybe just enjoying some mulled wine by the fire!

There you have it—a mix of holiday cheer and weather variety to match! Stay warm, stay festive, and have a great weekend as we count down to Christmas!
