Wopke Hoekstra

Wopke Hoekstra has been the European Commissioner for Climate Action since 9 October 2023. Before assuming office in Brussels, he held various political positions in the Netherlands and worked in the private sector. After graduating in law from Leiden University, and having studied at LUISS in Rome, he worked at Shell for two years. After that, he completed an MBA at INSEAD in France and Singapore and worked for consultancy firm McKinsey & Company from 2006 to 2017, becoming a partner in 2013. In 2011, Hoekstra became the youngest member of the Dutch Senate – for the party Christen-Democratisch Appèl (EPP), which he led between 2020 and 2023. From 2017 to 2022, Hoekstra served as Minister of Finance, and from early 2022 until August 2023, he was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. He was nominated as European Commissioner for Climate Action by the Dutch government.

The Green Agenda Cyprus Summit

The purpose of the Green Agenda Cyprus Summit, held for the first time in Cyprus, is to support the efforts towards Cyprus' Green Transition, aiming to make our country an example of ecological living and sustainable development.

The Green Agenda Cyprus Summit will host influential leaders from the nation's business community, alongside keynote speakers of international renown who will captivate and motivate the audience. Notably, the government's participation will underscore the importance of its role in shaping the vision and strategies for the green transition. Deliberations and presentations will center on the critical examination of climate change risks and their far-reaching effects on human life, the financial sector, industry, real estate, and insurance.

The production of renewable energy sources, storage, and optimal smart distribution, financing the green transition, sustainability, and the evolution of the food production chain, as well as waste management, will all be at the heart of the Green Agenda Cyprus Summit 2024.

The Green Agenda Cyprus Summit will take place on May 20th at the Hilton Hotel with the support of the Central Bank of Cyprus.
