Construction begins on new UK High Commission in Nicosia

€40 million eco-friendly project highlights strong Cyprus-UK partnership.

Construction has officially begun on the new British High Commission in Nicosia, marking the start of a €40 million-plus project that promises to be the largest currently underway on the UK’s diplomatic estate.

The site, part of the historic Central Prisons’ compound, will be transformed into a modern, eco-friendly compound featuring a new High Commission office, a security facility, and a residence for the British High Commissioner. The buildings are designed to be carbon-neutral, supporting Cyprus’ efforts to tackle climate change.

Groundbreaking took place in December, and the project is expected to be completed by November 2028. While construction is ongoing, the existing High Commission buildings will remain fully operational, with temporary access points in place to ensure public services continue uninterrupted.

British High Commissioner Michael Tatham said the new project represents “a massive upgrade” and reflects the importance the UK places on its partnership with Cyprus. “We are looking forward to seeing a new High Commission take shape and to inviting our many Cypriot friends and partners to see it soon,” he said.

The project is also a boost for the local economy, with Cypriot-owned Atlas Pantou serving as the prime contractor.

“This is more than just bricks and mortar,” the High Commissioner added. “It’s a symbol of the strong and growing relationship between our countries and a commitment to building for the future, sustainably and responsibly.”
