Coronavirus checks to be stepped up at checkpoints

Police presence to be boosted at checkpoints, as Cyprus prepares for coronavirus which is making its way across Europe

Newsroom

Cyprus authorities decided on Wednesday to ramp up checks for coronavirus at checkpoints through an increase of the number of police stationed there.

A meeting between the several Ministries on Tuesday focused exclusively on the coronavirus pandemic, which Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou said will also take up a large chunk of Thursday’s Council of Ministers meeting, as per the request of President Nicos Anastasiades.

In addition to stepping up checks at checkpoints, Ioannou said that additional measures are being evaluated, which may be announced in the coming days.

During the meeting held at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Health, Justice, as well as the Director-General of the Interior Ministry and other state officials, Ioannou said that an evaluation of the local and international situation up until now was made.

The Health Minister added that President Anastasiades asked that a large portion of the Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday focuses on informing him and the governing body of all matters relating to coronavirus.
