Cypriot personnel from the Cyprus National Guard took part in the 2026 “Best Warrior” military competition at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst from May 5 to 8, testing their endurance, tactical ability, and operational readiness alongside international counterparts.

According to the National Guard, the participation formed part of the ongoing Joint Action Program between Cyprus and the state of New Jersey through the State Partnership Program (SPP), a defense cooperation initiative that has linked the two sides for the past four years.

The competition placed participants through demanding military-style exercises designed to measure physical fitness, mental resilience, and battlefield decision-making under pressure. The Cypriot contingent also had the opportunity to exchange operational experience with American forces and gain exposure to international military procedures and tactics.

In a statement posted online, the New Jersey National Guard said four soldiers from the Republic of Cyprus represented their country “with pride” during the event, praising their commitment and performance throughout the competition.

Awards were presented to the participants by Yvonne L. Mays, who is Adjutant General of New Jersey and commissioner of the state’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

The State Partnership Program between Cyprus and New Jersey has expanded military cooperation in recent years through joint training activities, exchanges, and operational collaboration between the two forces.
