The “excellent” level of relations between Cyprus and China was underscored Friday during a meeting between House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou and Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee, who is visiting the island.
According to a statement from the House of Representatives, Demetriou welcomed Liu during an official visit that highlighted the strong ties between the two countries, built on shared principles, mutual respect, and solidarity on key international issues.
The statement said both sides emphasized the growth in parliamentary exchanges in recent years, noting them as a key pillar of their relationship.
Demetriou expressed appreciation for China’s consistent support on the Cyprus issue as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. She stressed that a solution to the decades-long division of the island must be based on the agreed framework and international law.
She also underscored the role of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing global challenges and called for closer cooperation through joint initiatives in multiple areas.
Demetriou reiterated Cyprus’s support for the "One China–One Cyprus" principle. She noted that Cyprus, which will hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, remains committed to advancing China–EU dialogue.
Liu reaffirmed Beijing’s support for a resolution of the Cyprus issue in line with U.N. resolutions and reiterated China’s commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.
He also thanked Cyprus for helping strengthen ties between China and the EU and voiced China’s readiness to work with Cyprus and other Global South nations to promote peace and stability.
The meeting concluded with both sides exchanging views on boosting cooperation in areas including culture, education, agriculture, innovation, and technology, the statement said.
