The Office of the European Parliament in Cyprus, alongside the European Commission and the Presidency, commemorates Europe Day with a series of events slated throughout the day.

High-profile figures including President Nikos Christodoulides, European Vice President Margaritis Schinas, and European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, are scheduled to attend and speak at various gatherings.

Additionally, the Nicosia Municipality joins in the festivities by raising the EU flag at the historic Town Hall in Eleftherias Square early in the day.

Among the over 60 landmarks across the EU, both the old Town Hall and Eleftherias Square will be illuminated to mark Europe Day on May 9.

In a press release, the European Parliament underscores the significance of this year's celebrations, emphasizing a campaign aimed at encouraging citizen participation in the upcoming European elections, scheduled for a month later.

Europe Day, observed annually on May 9th, commemorates the Schuman Declaration's anniversary, wherein Robert Schuman proposed a new form of political cooperation in Europe aimed at fostering peace and unity. This visionary proposal is credited with laying the groundwork for what evolved into the European Union.
