Cyprus is continuing to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, with another 900 tons moving through the Amalthea maritime corridor as civilians face an increasingly desperate humanitarian situation.
The shipment is being delivered in two stages. The first 600 tons arrived Thursday, while the remaining 300 tons are expected to follow, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said during a media briefing at the Presidential Palace.
The cargo includes medicines, medical equipment, food, hygiene products and shelter supplies, basic items intended to meet the immediate needs of civilians living through the conflict.
The operation is being carried out with the United Nations, the United Arab Emirates, participating countries and international humanitarian organisations. The aid is handled under the relevant U.N. monitoring mechanism, with Cyprus serving as the collection, storage, inspection and coordination point before each shipment departs.
According to the government, more than 37,000 tons of humanitarian assistance have now been transported and delivered through the Cyprus-based corridor.
That figure shows how Amalthea has developed since it was first presented as a Cypriot proposal. It is now being used by governments, U.N. agencies and aid organisations as an international logistics route rather than a one-off emergency mission.
Cyprus’ role is not simply to provide a port and wave goodbye to a departing ship. Supplies are gathered and stored on the island, inspected and cleared before sailing, while officials coordinate with international partners responsible for their onward movement and distribution.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organization used the Amalthea framework to transport emergency nutrition supplies from Limassol. The WHO described Cyprus as a strategic humanitarian staging point, highlighting its proximity to Gaza and its position within the European Union.
The latest shipment also includes more than food. Medicines, hygiene products and shelter equipment are particularly important for families living in damaged buildings, tents or overcrowded temporary accommodation.
For Cyprus, Amalthea is one of the clearest examples of how the island’s geography can become an asset rather than simply a source of vulnerability. Sitting close to a region repeatedly shaken by war, Cyprus has increasingly positioned itself as a safe evacuation point, diplomatic bridge and humanitarian hub.
