Cyprus tweaks gas deal to speed exports to Egypt

Changes to the Sargon field deal aim to make sending Cypriot gas easier and faster.

Cyprus and Egypt are taking steps to streamline the export of Cypriot natural gas, officials said Friday, as the two countries look to deepen energy ties amid the island’s EU Council Presidency.

Government sources said the clause requiring 20% of production from the “Sargon” gas field to be sent to Egypt is being modified, a move aimed at easing the transport of Cypriot natural gas to Egyptian markets. The update comes after a meeting at the Presidential Palace between President Nikos Christodoulides and Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Karim Badawi, who was in Nicosia representing President Abdel Fattah El Sisi at the opening ceremony of Cyprus’ EU Presidency.

Officials also expressed optimism that technical and regulatory hurdles in Block 12 will soon be resolved, paving the way for production from the Aphrodite gas field to continue.

The two countries have been steadily advancing energy cooperation. In February 2025, the presidents of Cyprus and Egypt witnessed the signing of a landmark agreement and memorandum of understanding on the exploitation of natural gas deposits in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone. The deal laid the foundation for further collaboration between the two nations.

Earlier this year, a Host Government Agreement was signed for the development of hydrocarbons in Block 6 of Cyprus’ EEZ. The agreement defines the framework for collaboration between the licensed consortium, ENI/TOTAL, and Egypt, allowing for the commercialization of the natural gas discoveries in the Kronos, Zeus, and Calypso fields.

With these developments, Cyprus and Egypt are moving closer to unlocking the potential of Eastern Mediterranean gas resources, aiming to secure a reliable supply for regional markets and strengthen their strategic energy partnership.
