Investigations are underway following the death of 66-year-old Andreas Michailides, who died Saturday after an altercation outside a local cafe.
A 57-year-old man, also a bus driver, has been arrested in connection with the incident and appeared before the Court on Sunday. He was ordered to be held in custody for eight days pending further investigation. Authorities said he faces a charge of premeditated murder.
According to reports, Michailides was passing by the café around 7:15 p.m. when patrons called out to him. A verbal argument ensued between him and the suspect, during which Michailides was struck in the head with fists. After reporting the altercation at the Peristerona Police Station, Michailides was directed to seek medical evaluation but lost consciousness while being transported to a private clinic by a relative. He was pronounced dead upon arrival.
An autopsy conducted Sunday did not reveal injuries sufficient to determine a cause of death, officials said. Samples have been taken for further laboratory analysis.
Police, who have gathered evidence from the scene and taken witness statements, said the case is being investigated by the Morphou Criminal Investigation Department.
The investigation remains ongoing.
