A fire broke out late Sunday night in a high-security wing of Cyprus Central Prisons, with police saying three inmates are believed to have deliberately started the blaze.
The fire was reported at around 10:15 p.m. in a wing housing 10 prisoners, according to a police statement.
Initial findings indicate that three inmates set fire to their cells and the corridor of the wing, causing mattresses to burn and smoke damage to the area.
Prison staff responded immediately and safely evacuated all inmates from the wing before the fire service arrived and extinguished the blaze.
No prisoners were injured. One prison employee was taken to the hospital as a precaution after inhaling smoke.
The inmates were temporarily moved to another wing while authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the incident.
