A major firefighting operation is underway after a large wildfire broke out around midday on Friday in the Kosi area, towards Athienou, sending firefighters and aircraft racing to contain the flames before they spread further.
With temperatures soaring and vegetation tinder-dry, even a small spark can quickly turn into a serious emergency during Cyprus' summer months, and authorities are leaving nothing to chance.
According to the Forestry Department, seven firefighting aircraft and 10 fire engines have been deployed to tackle the blaze, while additional support has also been requested from the Fire Service.
As a precaution, a nearby National Guard outpost has been evacuated due to its proximity to the fire.
Authorities have also activated the "Ikaros" project, a coordinated emergency response mechanism used to support major wildfire operations.
Fire crews remain on the scene as efforts continue to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire has not yet been announced.
Residents are urged to avoid the area and follow any instructions issued by the authorities as the firefighting operation continues.
