Two women were hospitalized early Saturday after inhaling smoke from a fire that broke out in staff living quarters at a hotel in the Famagusta district.

The blaze started around 1:40 a.m. in a ground-floor apartment of the hotel complex, where staff members reside, according to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis. Two fire engines from the Famagusta Fire Station responded to the scene.

The fire was confined to one of three bedrooms in the apartment but caused extensive damage to the room and its contents. Smoke and heat also affected other parts of the residence.

Six foreign nationals were inside the apartment at the time of the fire. All managed to evacuate safely after becoming aware of the danger.

The two hospitalized women had been in the bedroom where the fire started. They were taken to Famagusta General Hospital as a precaution, mainly due to smoke inhalation and signs of panic, Kettis said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Service in cooperation with police.
