A 23-year-old man was arrested after allegedly driving over three times the permitted alcohol limit and crashing into another car in Limassol, leaving a 27-year-old woman with a fractured arm, as police recorded 260 traffic offences during overnight operations across Cyprus.
The collision occurred shortly after midnight on Friday at the junction of Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue and Marinou Geroulanou and Georgiou Averof streets. The 27-year-old was driving with a 62-year-old woman and a 14-year-old passenger when her car collided with the man's vehicle.
She was taken to hospital with a fractured arm and admitted for treatment. Her two passengers sustained minor injuries, received first aid and were discharged.
An alcohol test on the 23-year-old recorded a reading of 75 micrograms, against the permitted limit of 22 micrograms. He was arrested, and Limassol Traffic Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
The incident came during a night of coordinated police operations across Cyprus, with officers carrying out patrols and targeted checks to prevent crime, enforce traffic laws and maintain public order.
Five people were arrested in total for offences including illegal possession of property, possession and use of drugs, possession of untaxed tobacco products, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
Police stopped and checked 282 drivers and 68 passengers, while 43 premises were inspected, resulting in one complaint.
Traffic officers issued 260 complaints for various violations, including 82 for speeding. Ten vehicles were impounded, and 10 cases involving suspected traffic offences were opened for investigation.
Of the 122 alcohol tests conducted, three resulted in complaints. All three preliminary drug tests carried out during the operations returned positive results.
Police said preventive patrols and targeted enforcement checks would continue daily, with the stated aim of reducing crime, improving road safety and protecting the public.
