For government employees and pensioners who need to change the bank account where their monthly payment lands, one more piece of bureaucracy is moving online.
Starting Thursday, eligible users can change the IBAN used for their government salary or pension directly through gov.cy, rather than relying on the traditional administrative process.
The General Accounting Office has launched three new digital services covering active and retired government officials and employees, as well as hourly-paid government workers.
The idea is straightforward: if someone changes banks, closes an old account, or simply wants their salary or pension deposited somewhere else, the request can now be submitted electronically.
The services can be found on gov.cy under the section for Salaries and Pensions of State Officials, Employees, and Hourly Government Personnel.
There is, however, a little preparation required.
Users must have a verified CY Login account before they can submit a request. They will also need to upload proof of the new bank account, either through a copy of the account details or an official certificate from their bank.
The document must clearly show the bank and branch, the name of the account holder or beneficiary, and the full international bank account number, or IBAN.
The government says the process has been designed to be simple and secure, allowing the change to be made remotely without unnecessary trips or paperwork.
The services were developed by the General Accounting Office in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy as part of the government's broader push to move more public services online.
It may not be the flashiest example of Cyprus going digital, but for anyone who has ever spent part of their working day trying to sort out a relatively simple government form, being able to make the change from a computer or phone may be exactly the sort of digital upgrade that counts.
