Nicosia’s afternoon has taken a wet turn, with heavy rain falling in the capital as a yellow thunderstorm warning comes into effect—just in time to complicate school pickups and the drive home.
The Department of Meteorology’s warning runs from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, with isolated strong thunderstorms expected mainly in the mountains, inland areas, and the northwest of the island.
Some storms could bring hail, while winds may change direction and strengthen suddenly.
Rainfall could locally exceed 35 millimeters in an hour. In everyday terms, that is a substantial amount of water arriving quickly, potentially leaving standing water on roads and making driving conditions difficult.
The forecast is for isolated storms, so conditions may vary considerably from one area to another. A relatively quiet stretch of road could give way to a heavy downpour further along the journey.
For anyone heading out this afternoon, allow extra time, slow down in heavy rain, and leave more space between vehicles. Avoid driving through flooded sections of road where the water’s depth is unclear.
The warning remains in place until 6 p.m., covering much of the afternoon commute.
