Heavy security in place for MED7 conference

Snipers in place, security tight in Nicosia as Southern European leaders meet in the capital

Newsroom

Many roads in Nicosia and Larnaca will be completely shut down on Tuesday for the MED7 conference, with some 800 cops on duty including sharpshooters on roofs of buildings not taking any chances.

Leaders and heads of state from seven EU member states are set to meet on Tuesday afternoon at the 5th Southern EU Countries Summit, set to take place at Nicosia’s Filoxenia Conference Centre.

Snipers will be stationed on roofs of buildings around the conference area and other locations for added security

Law enforcement officials have put in place a massive security plan by blocking roads in Larnaca and Nicosia, while no vehicles or pedestrians will be allowed near the conference centre or any of the motorcades.

Police helicopters and unmanned drones will be flying in the greater area over Filoxenia to monitor the security apparatus and report back to headquarters any status updates.

Both lanes of traffic on Aglandjia avenue will also be completely shut down between 4pm and 8pm, starting from Limassol avenue all the way to the new roundabout by Aglandjia middle school.

Snipers will also be stationed on roofs of buildings around the conference area and other locations for added security, while reports said the coast guard has also been put on alert for the whole day.
