Authorities probe possible lapses in care after patient falls and passes away

Investigations continue into the death of a 42-year-old woman at Larnaca General Hospital, where she had been hospitalized and previously underwent surgery. Authorities are examining whether lapses in care contributed to her passing.

The woman’s family had filed a formal complaint with both the Ministry of Health and hospital management, alleging serious omissions during her hospitalization from Jan. 15 to Jan. 18. According to the family, she had repeatedly called for assistance to use the bathroom on Jan. 17, but staff did not respond, forcing her to try to get up on her own. She fell again in the early hours of Jan. 18 and was found at 6:20 a.m., face down, half-naked, and wet in a comatose and critical condition. She died the following day.

Police, in collaboration with the state health services agency OKYpY, are investigating whether medical or paramedical staff were negligent. OKYpY said the inquiry is expected to conclude soon.

The incident has raised concerns about patient safety and staff response in Cyprus hospitals. The family’s complaint has put a spotlight on potential gaps in care for patients needing assistance, and authorities are reviewing the hospital’s procedures to determine if standards were breached.
