Keir Starmer resigns amid pressure, as UK political instability continues

Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, is seen as a frontrunner to take over as Britain moves toward its seventh prime minister in just 10 years.

Keir Starmer has announced he is stepping down as leader of Britain’s Labour Party after coming under growing pressure from lawmakers within his own ranks, setting off a new leadership battle at the top of UK politics.

His departure means Britain is now set to see its seventh prime minister in just 10 years, a striking sign of continued political instability in one of Europe’s key countries.

Starmer’s resignation comes only two years after he led Labour to a landslide election victory, returning the party to power after more than a decade in opposition. But internal tensions and mounting political pressure have now forced him to step aside.

Attention is already turning to who comes next. Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, is seen as a frontrunner to take over within weeks, while former health minister Wes Streeting has ruled himself out of the race and is backing Burnham.

For many observers, the timing highlights how fragile political stability has remained in the UK in the years since the Brexit referendum, which reshaped British politics and triggered a decade of economic and political turbulence.

With Labour now forced into yet another internal transition, the focus shifts to whether the party can steady itself or whether Britain’s cycle of political turnover is set to continue.
