EOA Larnaca rolls out emergency measures to prevent summer water cut-offs.

The Larnaca District Local Government Organization (EOA Larnaca) has announced a package of emergency measures aimed at reducing water consumption in the city and district by 10%, in an effort to prevent water cut-offs amid Cyprus’s worsening water situation.

The measures were approved at an extraordinary meeting of the Organization’s Board of Directors and were reported by the Cyprus News Agency on Wednesday. According to EOA Larnaca, the primary objective is to curb demand so that available water reserves can meet needs, particularly during the high-consumption summer period.

In its announcement, EOA Larnaca said that since assuming responsibility for water supply networks on 1 July 2024, it has already achieved a significant reduction in water losses through systematic management and targeted interventions.

As part of the new plan, repair works will be intensified, with immediate action on both visible and hidden leaks. The Organization will reinforce repair crews and extend working hours to accelerate maintenance. Old household connections in problematic networks will also be replaced, especially in newly acquired water supply areas where losses remain high.

The measures further provide for the suspension of water supply to green areas, traffic islands, and private plots where water is used for irrigation. Where feasible, boreholes will be incorporated into the overall water balance to supplement supplies.

EOA Larnaca also announced cooperation with the Water Development Department to provide nozzle attachments for household taps. These devices, once installed, can reduce water consumption by up to 40%, according to the Organization.

Inspections targeting the use of water hoses will be significantly stepped up, in line with the Water Saving Law. Authorized inspection teams will conduct organized on-site checks across the city and district, focusing on the washing of pavements, roads, verandas, railings, and motor vehicles using hoses.

Public awareness efforts will also be strengthened. Information campaigns will focus on rational water use, conservation practices, and proper irrigation methods. A separate initiative will target schools at all levels in Larnaca, with informational presentations designed to instill water-saving habits among students.

In addition, an informational leaflet will be sent to all EOA Larnaca consumers, reminding them of their obligation to maintain a water storage tank with a minimum capacity of 800 liters and to ensure that pumping systems in apartment buildings are operational.

EOA Larnaca concluded by calling on residents to actively support the water-saving effort, stressing that broad public cooperation is essential to avoid future water supply interruptions.
