More people looking for work as registered unemployment rises nearly 10%

Cyprus recorded 742 more registered jobseekers than a year earlier, while figures adjusted for seasonal changes also edged up.

More people were registered as looking for work in Cyprus at the end of September, with the total rising nearly 10% compared with the same month last year.

Figures released Tuesday by the Statistical Service show 8,366 people were registered as unemployed at district labor offices—742 more than in September 2025, an increase of 9.7%.

The rise was mainly linked to public administration and defense, information and communication, and administrative and support services.

For people searching for a job, the figures point to a growing number of others in the same position. They do not, however, show how many vacancies are available or how long applicants are waiting to find work.

The picture also worsened slightly compared with August once seasonal changes were taken into account.

That adjusted figure rose to 10,809 in September, up from 10,715 the previous month—an increase of 94 people.

The two September totals measure the same picture differently. The first is the actual number registered at labor offices at the end of the month. The second is adjusted to account for regular seasonal patterns, helping show whether unemployment is moving up or down beyond those usual changes.

Both comparisons show an increase. But these are figures for registered unemployment, covering people signed up at district labor offices. They are not the country’s overall unemployment rate and do not include every person who may be out of work.
